Autumn Tests 2010
Local youngster gets Samoan star's silverware!
Thursday, 17 June 2010

Last month Scottish Rugby hosted the final leg of the IRB Sevens World Series at Murrayfield with Samoa securing the Cup and Series title. A star of the that international side is now inextricably linked with Haddington RFC after one of the East Lothian club's young players was involved in their own slice of sevens heaven!

Eager to secure a souvenir from the title winners, Haddington Colts winger Euan Catterall approached Samoan star - and IRB Player of the Series - Mikaele Pesamino as the players left the tunnel and was rewarded with his shorts. On further inspection, Euan discovered a box containing the player's Series medal in a pocket and ran after the team to return it. Excitement over? Not quite, as on his way home, Euan found another, smaller box tucked in the other pocket - this time it was Pesamino's Edinburgh winners' medal! The youngster immediately called Scottish Rugby on his arrival home and returned to Murrayfield, as planned, two days later to see Scotland XV take on Japan Select, and to hand back the medal.

To Euan's delight, on hand to receive it on Pesamino's behalf was Scotland star Chris Cusiter, as team members and management gathered round to have a look at the medal and congratulate Euan on his honesty.

Euan said: "When I discovered the first box, I immediately ran back and gave it to him but the second smaller box was tucjed away in another pocket and I didn't discover that one until we were on our way home. My dad and I rang the stadium as soon as we could and arranged to bring it back a couple of days later, when we returned for the Scotland game against Japan.

"It was great to meet Chris and the other members of the team - as a winger myself, my favourite player is Sean Lamont. And Mikaele Pesamino, now!"

Scottish Rugby's Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay, said: "It was a great weekend and we were delighted to welcome Euan, and his dad, back to Murrayfield to return the medal and complete the story for Mikaele and Samoa."
