Grant Anderson played his first Scotland under-20 game in the 18-17 win against Wales at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in February 2009. He went on to play in all 10 of Scotland’s under-20 matches that year, five each in the Six Nations and the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan, starting in all bar one. He scored four tries in the world championship, two of them in the match against Fiji in Osaka.

More than a year earlier, while a pupil at Gourock High School, he made his debut in international seven-a-side rugby at the age of 18 playing for the Rugby Ecosse Scotland squad in the Singapore tournament in October 2007. Then came his IRB World Sevens Series debut in the Dubai tournament the following month, and he was again in the squad in the subsequent tournament in George (South Africa) as well as the London and Edinburgh events at the end of that season. He returned to the Singapore sevens in the Scottish Thistles’ squad who won the Shield tournament in November 2008, and he went on to the play in the Dubai and George events that opened the IRB’s 2008-2009 series as well as the same two tournaments in December 2009. He had previously played for Glasgow under-16 and under-18 and Scotland under-18.

Grant, who is a contracted member of Scottish Rugby’s National Academy, played for Greenock Wanderers before joining Ayr.
