Matthew David Cheyne Lamb was born in England and went on to attend Balfron High School.

At under-15 level he was was a Scottish Cup champion in 2008 and played for Caledonia at under-16 and under-17 levels. He was Balfron HS's individual sports champion in 2010 and holds Duke of Edinburgh awards at bronze and silver levels.

His uncle played rugby for England at under-18 and under-21 levels while his dad won a silver medal in British Open Olympic freestyle wrestling.
