JONNY MACDONALD
Currently in his second year at Cardiff University, where he studies Business management, Jonny (who qualifies through his Scottish grandfather Neil, from Renfrew) first began his education at the British School in Abu Dhabi where, at the tender age of three, he was introduced to rugby, playing through the Abu Dhabi age-grades (continuing to do so even after moving to board at St George’s in England. As a high school pupil he spent three years (14-17) in the Saracens Academy and was selected for the south east England under-16 team.
After school Jonny spent a gap years traveling/working before returning to Abu Dhabi to play for the Arabian Gulf for one year, appearing in the Sevens World Cup in Dubai, three Dubai 7s tournaments on the World Series and in two Asian 5 Nations.
Despite being capped in three Dubai tournaments and the 2010 Rugby World Cup Sevens, MacDonald (who qualifies for selection through his grandfather Neil, from Renfrew) became eligible for Scotland selection following the disbandment of the Arabian Gulf which, through an IRB ruling, makes him available to play for another nation.
