FINLAY GILLIES
Finlay John Gillies was in the winning team on his debuts for Scotland at under-19 and under-20 levels. A replacement on both occasions, he played in the win against Italy in Parabagio, near Milan, in February 2008, and that was followed with Scotland’s win against Wales at McDiarmid Park, Perth, on the opening day of the under-20 Six Nations Championship in February 2009.
A week after the Perth match he had his first start for Scotland under-20 in the game against France in Chalon-sur-Saone. He also started in the three other matches in that championship, and three months later in the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan he again appeared in all five matches, starting in three and scoring two tries in the 35-26 win against Fiji in Osaka.
Finlay has also played for Scotland under-18 as well as Edinburgh under-16 and under-18. A contracted member of Scottish Rugby’s Academy, he played for Haddington before switching to Heriot’s.
Outside rugby the Dunbar Grammar School former pupil has played for East Lothian’s county teams at both badminton and volleyball and was ranked in the Scottish top 50 in table tennis. He is studying sport and exercise science at Napier University.
In March 2010 he made his debut for the Scotland Club International team in their fixture against their Irish counterparts in Dublin before debuting for the Scotland 7s team inthe HSBC Sevens World Series event Hong Kong before traveling with the squad to Adelaide.
