Scotland's preparations for the 2010 Women's World Cup in England ramp up on Sunday (18 July) as they take on Ireland in an uncapped international at Lasswade (kick-off 1pm, admission is free). Having played South Africa in two home Test matches at the Bonnyrigg ground last month, the match is Scotland's final preparation fixture ahead of the flagship women's international competition, and the first since World Cup squad selection three weeks ago. Head coach, Gary Parker, said: "This match has been set up as a training game of three half hours to give ourselves and the Irish one last chance to try out different combinations in a real game. "It's another opportunity to put our training into practice against a team that doesn't know our calls or what lines players will run. We're looking to see how all these things work in a match environment which will offer a real insight to our progress."
Having focused solely on World Cup preparations since the 6 Nations, Parker has been overwhelmed by the commitment shown by the players, all of whom have managed an increased skills and fitness programme along side their full-time occupations.
"I spent some time speaking to supporters after the South Africa games who had never watched a women's international before and they were really impressed by the standard and commitment of good quality rugby players desperate to play for their country." The 2010 WRWC begins in August with Scotland drawn against France, Canada and Sweden in Pool C.
