Head coach Andy Robinson is urging his Scotland players to focus on delivering a winning performance against Argentina in Mar del Plata on Saturday (kick-off 7.45pm BST - live on BBC2 Scotland). Extraneous achievements – such as the first time since 2002 that Scotland have won three successive Test matches – though admittedly on that occasion all the games were on home soil – or securing Scotland’s first away cap Test series success are within the players’ grasp. Victory, too, would boost Scotland’s position in the IRB world rankings but Robinson, methodically, insists that only ice in the mind and fire in the belly will help his players do the business tomorrow, alongside an improvement in the form which produced a 24-16 success in Tucuman last weekend.

Robinson expects that the Pumas will be better organised this week – Tucuman was their first international for more than six months- and Scotland are prepared for a proverbial home backlash. Scotland arrived in Mar del Plata, a holiday playground for the Buenos Aires elite during the summer, much quieter in the local winter, on Thursday and trained today at the 57,000 capacity Estadia Maria Minella, parts of which looked like a modern-day Aztec temple. Local rugby union officials say more than 30,000 tickets have been sold for tomorrow. The pitch was in tremendous condition with a little morning dew when Scotland arrived and there were similarities with Croke Park in that on the stand side from which the team will enter there is a huge run-off of grass between the stand and the touchline. Robinson and his players are keen to score tries and attack Argentina in the wide channels, so, from attack coach Gregor Townsend’s viewpoint the pitch could have been wider still. Attacking intent, however, may be hampered by the local metrology, as heavy rain and a blustery wind are forecast for tomorrow. You can listen to Andy Robinson’s thoughts ahead of the second Test below.
