Robert Edward Dewey scored a try in each of the first two games he played for Scotland. He had his try-scoring debut in the Bank of Scotland Corporate international victory against Romania at Murrayfield in November 2006, when his sledgehammer tackling and direct running were also key elements in the Scots’ 48-6 win. Injury kept him out of Scotland’s next two internationals (against Pacific Islanders and Australia), but he scored another try when he returned to the national team as a replacement in the Calcutta Cup match against England at Twickenham in February 2007. A week later he was back in the starting line-up for the Murrayfield win against Wales, and in Scotland’s next match, Italy’s Murrayfield visit, he scored his third try for his country in his fourth international. A fourth try followed later that year on his World Cup debut, his ninth international, when Scotland beat Portugal 56-10 in St Etienne. Rob played in all five of Scotland’s RWC matches, starting in four of them.

Previously, he represented Caledonia at all age levels and played for Scotland at under-18, under-19 and under-21 levels as well as the national sevens squad. He has also played for Scotland A, starting as outside centre in all three matches in the 2008 Barclays Churchill Cup in North America and scoring a characteristically forceful try in the 27-24 win against Argentina in Kingston, Ontario. In November that year he also scored a try for Scotland A in the Firhill win against Georgia, and three months later he played another game at that level against the Irish at the RDS, Dublin. Two more Scotland A appearances followed against Russia and Uruguay in the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest in June 2009, when he scored a try in the first of those games. He made an appearance for Scotland A in February 2010 against Ireland A at Ravenhill.

Rob made his Scotland seven-a-side debut at the IRB Emirates Airline London tournament in June 2005, helping Scotland to finish seventh equal after reaching the cup quarter-finals. He returned to sevens duty for the RWC tournament in Dubai, where Scotland won the Plate competition.

Rob’s national under-19 honours included the 2002 world junior championship in Italy, and he scored two tries in the Scottish Districts under-21 team’s 49-14 victory against New Zealand Youth in November 2003. Three months later he made his international under-21 debut against Wales at Bridgend, going on to play in all of Scotland’s four other games that season. He was also a key member of the Scotland squad during the 2004 IRB Under 21 World Championship on home soil. He travelled to South Africa with the Scotland squad on the 2006 tour, and though he did not play in either Test match the experience benefited him on his debut five months later.

In club rugby he was the joint top try-scorer in BT Premiership Division One in season 2004-2005 with 16 for Heriot’s, alongside club-mate Marc Teague and Melrose’s Geoff Caldwell. Rob also made four appearances (including two starts) for Edinburgh that season before accepting a contract with the professional team ahead of season 2005-2006. He moved on to Ulster for 2007-2008, but he returned to Scotland in summer 2009 to play for Glasgow Warriors.
