Scotland 42-5 Chinese Taipei
To secure a place in the Bowl quarter-finals, the Scotland 7s team required a big win over Chinese Taipei on day two of the IRB Sevens World Series event in Hong Kong. They also needed to follow that up with a confident performance against New Zealand. That’s exactly what happened as they scored a six-try-to-one victory over the Chinese and really took their game to the Kiwis. The Scots snatched a Lee Jones double, either side of a score from Mike Adamson, giving them a 21-0 half-time lead once Adamson had converted all three. Adamson struck again in the second period, converting his own score, before Grant Anderson followed suit. Stuart McInally notched the Scots’ sixth try. Peter Jericevich converted. A late unconverted score from Taipei denied the Scots a clean sheet. Their final pool match was against World Series leaders New Zealand. Despite conceding three tries in the first half, only one converted, Scotland stayed competitive throughout. Andrew Turnbull ran in a long-range try from within Scotland’s own 22 to buoy the side as they asked questions of the abbreviated All Blacks. A late try sealed the win for the Kiwis, but Scotland 7s coach Stephen Gemmell took heart from the team’s efforts. “It was a much improved performance,” he said. “This is a young squad and we have ten players who have never played in Hong Kong before so I was impressed at how they responded to upping their game. “The big difference in our first game today was that we stuck to our shape, were accurate at the contact and retained possession. “We had a real crack at New Zealand and pulled them around the park. It was probably as good a performance Scotland have had against New Zealand since I’ve been involved. “We said the France game was a missed opportunity but we have improved throughout the three pool matches and the challenge is now to keep that going into tomorrow.” “The most important thing for me is that the players can take belief into day three.” Scotland will face Japan in the quarter-final of the Bowl competition tomorrow at 11.05am (3.05am GMT).
