Ross Michael Rennie made his Scotland debut as a replacement in the RBS Six  Nations Championship match against Ireland at Croke Park in February 2008. That was only three weeks after he scored a try in his first Scotland A match in the 37-15 win against Italy A at Mogliano, near Venice. That quick promotion was reward for outstanding performances for Edinburgh earlier in the season in the Heineken Cup and Magners League.

While an apprentice, Ross started at open side in Edinburgh’s first five matches of the 2006-2007 season. He was then rewarded with a full-time contract, and midway through 2007-2008 he was well established as Edinburgh’s regular at open side. Two months after his international debut his Edinburgh contract was extended by two years, His Edinburgh performances earned him selection in Scotland’s December and January training squads in preparation for the 2008 RBS Six Nations Championship. Ross made his international seven-a-side debut at the IRB Emirates Airline London tournament in June 2005. On day two of the tournament he scored his first try in the 40-7 cup quarter-final loss to England. He went on to earn his second sevens cap a week later at the IRB GMF Paris Sevens.

In 2005-2006 he has played in six tournaments in the IRB world sevens series as well as the Commonwealth Games sevens, and the following season he added to his sevens honours by playing in the Hong Kong and Adelaide (Australia) events. Ross made a try-scoring debut for Scotland under-21 in the IRB world championship match against Australia in Vichy, France, in June 2006. A year earlier he had played in the IRB Under 19 World Championship in Durban, South Africa, where he added to earlier Scotland under-19 internationals appearances that season against Italy, England, and France. In December 2004 he was a member of the Scotland Sevens squad for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, Australia, where they took the silver medal from the plate competition. In 15-a-side rugby Ross helped Stewart’s Melville FP to win promotion in 2005 to BT Premiership Division One in what was his first season with the club. As well as age grades and sevens, Ross has represented his country at under-18 level and also Edinburgh in that age-group.
