Mark Edward McMillan has the rare experience of playing in three age-grade international wins against England in successive years. He captained Scotland in a 35-8 victory in Cardiff in the 2001 Four Home Unions’ under-18 tournament, a 17-10 success followed in the next year’s IRB/FIRA world junior championship match in Treviso, Italy, and he scored the first of the four tries in the 33-22 triumph at Newbury in the final match of the IRB Under-21 World Cup in June 2003.

However, it was four years before he was back in a national jersey, when he played two matches for Scotland A in the 2007 Churchill Cup tournament in England. He was on the Scotland A bench for the Mogliano match against Italy A in February 2008, and though not called on to play then he made a replacement appearance three weeks later in the 67-7 win against Ireland A at McDiarmid Park, Perth. He had two more games for Scotland A four months later in the Barclays Churchill Cup in Canada and the USA, making his first start in the win against Canada and making a replacement appearance in the final against England Saxons, and as starting scrum half, he scored a try in the 69-3 win against Georgia at Firhill, Glasgow, in November 2008. He had three more Scotland A appearances in the 2009 matches against Ireland A, Italy A, and Tonga. In 2010, Mark represented Scotland A against Italy A, Georgia, Namibia, Argentina Jaguars and USA Eagles.

Mark, a product of the Stirling County youth programme, had two years in the national under-18 squad, captaining the team in four games in 2000-2001 and scoring five tries in that season’s campaign, including three against Spain. The following season he played in all four of the Scotland under-19 squad’s world championship matches in Italy, and in the 2002-2003 season he started only as back-up scrum half behind Chris Cusiter for the Six Nations’ under-21 tournament. However, he took over when Chris was injured against Wales at Henley in the opening game of that age group’s World Cup, and he went on to play as starting scrum half in Scotland’s four other matches, finishing with his try-scoring appearance in the win against the English at Newbury.

He made his competition debut for Glasgow in the Celtic Cup victory over Celtic Warriors at Bridgend in September 2003. He joined Leeds Tykes later that season, scoring four tries in 22 appearances for the Headingley club before moving to London Wasps in summer 2006, and he returned to Glasgow Warriors in summer 2008. Mark made his debut for Wasps in a pre-season friendly against Newbury and played as a replacement in the London club’s Heineken Cup final victory against Leicester Tigers at Twickenham in May 2007, the month in which he made his Scotland A debut against England Saxons, also at Twickenham. He was, too, in Wasps’ winning squad in the Twickenham sevens in August 2006.
