OUR CHANCE TO FINISH CHAMPIONSHIP ON A HIGH
Friday, 19 March 2010

Captain Chris Cusiter is determined that the frustrations of the last two months will be exorcised when Scotland conclude their 2010 RBS 6 Nations Championship campaign against Ireland at Croke Park tomorrow.

While all the talk in Dublin is of Ireland marking the stadium’s swansong as a rugby venue with a Triple Crown, that’s not a theme that Scotland’s scrum-half will entertain.

“We have not won in this championship and as a group we feel we should have (won).  We have one last chance to do so,” he declared after Scotland had completed their final training session untroubled at Croke Park this morning.

“We know they are going for the Triple Crown and it’s the last game at Croke Park but for us it’s a huge game too – our last chance to get something out of this championship.”

Cusiter spoke of the players’ frustration at being the nearly team of this competition – with narrow defeats against Wales and Italy and last weekend’s draw against England at Murrayfield.

“I’m frustrated.  I know a lot of people are frustrated about how the other games have gone because I genuinely feel we have had opportunities to have won games,” he added.

Asked whether scoring tries tomorrow in a lost cause would give any satisfaction Cusiter railed against that notion.  “We are not coming here with any thoughts other than winning – that’s our objective.  I believe we are capable of winning but we have to play our best game in the championship,” he stressed.

Earlier head coach Andy Robinson had reiterated that flanker Kelly Brown is fit to play and spoke again about his admiration for the Ireland team, citing their composure at crucial stages this season, both at home against Australia and away against England.  That refusal to panic and faith in their own ability to conjure scores was a commendable quality, he said.

Robinson expects the back-row to be a key battle tomorrow and he is looking for his team to police the all Lions Irish back-row.   “We need to put their back-row, Tommy Bowe and Jon Sexton on the floor and make sure we stop any momentum that those five players are able to produce,” he said.

Tomorrow’s forecast is for wind and rain and with one end of the cavernous Croke Park open to the elements Scotland will come prepared for whatever the elements will throw at them.
