Gavin Kerr became the 24th Scot to reach the 50-international landmark when he appeared as a replacement in the 2008 RBS Six Nations Championship match against Ireland at Croke Park, Dublin. He played at loose head for Scotland in 15 successive internationals from the 2006 win against France at Murrayfield until the equivalent match in Paris a year later. That run began with his excellent support play in the opening victory against France in the 2006 RBS Six Nations Championship, and he was also a key figure in Scotland’s powerful scrummage in victory against Wales in the Six Nations match at Murrayfield in February 2007. He missed the World Cup warm-up win against Ireland at Murrayfield in August 2007, but he was back as starting loose head for the game against South Africa two weeks later as well as the subsequent Rugby World Cup wins against Romania and Italy. He played in all five RWC matches, starting in three.
Gavin made his first start for Scotland against South Africa in Durban in 2003, and he held his place at loose-head for the second Test in Johannesburg. He was again on the left of the scrum against Wales in the RWC Countdown Test that year, and soon afterwards his first Rugby World Cup start was marked by a try against the USA. Throughout the 2003 RBS Six Nations Championship, with the exception of the Italy game, he was introduced as a substitute, as he was throughout the 2004 tournament. Gavin was at tight-head throughout the 2005 Six Nations, and he was again an ever-present in the next two years’ championships, though on the other side of the front row. He has represented Scotland at under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels, competing in the FIRA World Junior Championship Italy in 1996, and he later had eight games for Scotland A in 2001 and 2002. Gavin, a former pupil of Berwick County High School, played his club rugby at Berwick before moving to Jed-Forest at the age of 18. He also represented the Scottish Borders at all age grade levels as well as the senior side for one year. After five years at Riverside Park he moved to Cheshire club Caldy before joining Leeds Tykes halfway through season 2001-2002. He returned to Scotland when he joined Border Reivers in summer 2006, and he moved to Edinburgh the following year. His competition debut for Reivers was against Connacht at Netherdale on the 2006-2007 Magners League’s opening day.
