Sean Fergus Lamont has scored seven tries for Scotland through his ball-hunting and powerful running. The most recent of those was in Scotland’s Paris match against France in the final round of the 2007 RBS Six Nations Championship. Less than two weeks later he was named The Famous Grouse Scotland Player of the Season, the first out-and-out wing to win the prize in the award’s 11 seasons. He went on to play in four of Scotland’s five matches in the 2007 Rugby World Cup, but a knee injury while he was playing for Northampton in November ruled him out of the 2008 RBS Six Nations Championship.

In November that year he returned to the Scotland XV for the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Test against New Zealand. Sean made a try-scoring Murrayfield debut against Australia in the 2004 Abbey Autumn Tests, and a week later he crossed the line again in helping Scotland to a century against Japan in Perth. He was on try-scoring form as he crossed the line twice in Scotland’s win over France at Murrayfield in the opening match of the 2006 RBS Six Nations, and in the corresponding match in Paris a year later, his thirtieth international, he scored his seventh try with a typically powerful run.

Sean won his first Scotland cap against Samoa in Wellington, New Zealand, on the 2004 summer tour and went on to start in the two subsequent Tests against Australia. Earlier in the tour he scored Scotland’s only try in the match against the Super 12 Queensland Reds. He was named man of the match in the Six Nations match against Italy in 2005 for his hard-hitting display in both attack and defence, and in the final match of that tournament he had a try against England at Twickenham.

He also had a try-scoring debut for Scotland A in the RDS Dublin match against the Irish in February 2009 – after he had won 36 caps. Later that month he also played in the drawn A international against Italy in Perth.

Another try-scoring debut followed when he was called into the Scotland squad as a replacement for the injured Thom Evans for the IRB Sevens World Series tournament at Murrayfield in May 2009. That try helped Scotland to a 33-17 win against England (winners of the previous weekend’s IRB tournament at Twickenham), and he had two more in the semi-final against South Africa. Those tries, however, could not prevent the Scots going down to an extra-time defeat by the South Africans, winners of the 2008-2009 series.

Sean, who, like brother Rory, is a former pupil of King Edward VII School in Melton Mowbray, joined Glasgow from Rotherham in the summer of 2003 before moving to Northampton Saints in 2005 and then Scarlets in 2009. He played in Scotland’s sevens team in the 2002 Commonwealth Games at Manchester. His other representative honours included Leicestershire Colts (while he was at Sheffield Hallam University) and Scottish Exiles. He joined Rotherham in 2000 and was the club’s under-21 captain in 2001.
