Max Brian Evans made his Scotland debut as a replacement in the win against Canada at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, in November 2008. In doing so, he joined his younger brother, Thom, in Scotland’s list of capped players. They are the 45th set of brothers to play rugby for Scotland, though Thom missed that match because of injury.

Three months later Max had his first start for Scotland in the RBS Six Nations Championship match against France in Paris. Thom returned to the XV for that match, and they thus became the 20th set of brothers to play together for Scotland. Max played in all five matches of the championship, starting in four, making his Six Nations debut as a try-scoring replacement against Wales in February.

Max celebrated his first Scotland A international by scoring two tries as a replacement wing in Scotland’s 67-7 victory against Ireland at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in February 2008, and he had a further try for that team nine months later in the 69-3 win against Georgia on his home ground at Firhill, Glasgow, eight days before winning his full cap. He and his brother, Thom, were in the Scotland squad who toured Argentina in June that year, though Max was not included in the match squad for either match. He joined Glasgow Warriors from Glasgow Hawks a year earlier after following his brother north. The utility back, whose preferred position is at outside centre, had previously played with London Scottish and was a member of Harlequins’ academy set-up. His appearances for Harlequins’ first XV were curtailed by a back injury.

Taking time away from rugby, Max was a professional golfer in Portugal from 2004 to 2006. During that time he underwent physio rehab on his back injury to allow him to return to the rugby field, which he did through the seven-a-side game. Max has played in four IRB world series sevens tournaments, all in 2007, making his debut in Hong Kong and playing the subsequent Adelaide (Australia), Twickenham, and Murrayfield events. Previously, he had played in the demonstration sevens match at half-time during the Six Nations game between Scotland and Ireland at Murrayfield in March 2007. Like his brother, Max is a former pupil of Wellington College.
