Philip James Godman passed 50 points for Scotland when he kicked three penalty goals and two conversions in the 23-10 win against Fiji at Murrayfield in November 2009 in the opening match of the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Test series.
He won his first cap for Scotland as a substitute in the 39-9 victory over Romania in June 2005. He had two more replacement caps in the autumn Tests that year, and first start for Scotland followed in November 2006 when he scored 18 points (a try, five conversions, and a penalty goal) in the 48-6 victory against Romania in the Bank of Scotland Corporate international at Murrayfield. After six caps in 2005 and 2006, five of them as a replacement, he made his RBS Six Nations Championship debut as stand-off in the 21-9 victory against Wales at Murrayfield in February 2007. He also started at fly half in the subsequent Murrayfield match against Italy, but he missed out on selection for that year’s Rugby World Cup.
He returned to Scotland’s squad in preparation for the 2008 RBS Six Nations Championship, though he was not chosen for any of the matches, and it was more than a year after his eighth cap that he returned for his next in June 2008, when Scotland squared the two-match series against Argentina with a 26-14 win in Buenos Aires. Five months later he kept his place at stand-off for the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests against New Zealand, South Africa and Canada, and he continued at stand-off throughout the 2009 Six Nations Championship. Playing in all three of Scotland’s Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests later that year extended his run to 12 successive international starts stand-off.
In summer 2006 he was fly half for Scotland A in all three games in the Barclays Churchill Cup tournament in Canada, kicking a vital drop goal in the 15-10 win against the host nation in Ottawa, and he also played in all three games in the 2007 equivalent tournament in England. In February 2008 he kicked 12 points in the 37-15 win against Italy in Mogliano, near Venice, and that was followed three weeks later with 18 points (including a try) against Ireland in the 67-7 win at McDiarmid Park, Perth.
Phil captained Merchiston Castle School to victory in the Scottish Schools Cup in 2000 before signing a professional contract with Newcastle Falcons. He moved from Newcastle during summer 2004 to his home city to join Edinburgh Rugby. He represented Scotland at under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels, including two world championships (under-19 in 2001 and under-21 in 2003).
