Andy Henderson
Scotland Player Archive - Scotland

Andrew Roger Henderson became the 22nd Scot to reach a half-century of caps when he played against France in the RBS Six Nations Championship match at Murrayfield in February 2008. He made a try-scoring debut for Scotland when he was a replacement in the 32-10 win in the postponed Six Nations match against Ireland at Murrayfield in September 2001. More recently, he had an even more notable try-scoring achievement against Ireland, with three in the World Cup warm-up win by 31-21 at Murrayfield in August 2007. A leg injury in the match against South Africa two weeks later kept him out of the team for Scotland’s first two Rugby World Cup games, but he returned for the Murrayfield game against New Zealand. Andy now has eight Scotland tries, all contributing to victory. Three of those have been scored away from Scottish rugby headquarters. His second, like his first, was as a replacement, during the 65-12 victory against the United States on the 2002 North American tour. His third, though on Scottish soil, was in the 100-8 victory against Japan at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in November 2004, and his fourth followed against Romania in Bucharest in May 2005. His other Murrayfield try was in the 34-22 win against the Pacific Islands in the Bank of Scotland Corporate international at Murrayfield in November 2006.

Andy was voted man of the match in Scotland’s first-ever win against The Barbarians (38-7) at Pittodrie, Aberdeen, in May 2005, form he sustained throughout the 2006 RBS Six Nations Championship and on to that year’s South African tour. After the 2002 North American visit it was a year before he returned to senior international duty, winning the inside-centre berth on both Tests of the South African tour. He was also on Scotland’s two-Test tour to Argentina in June 2008, though he was not in the match squad for either match. Andy, a former pupil of Lenzie Academy, played for Glasgow’s under-18, under-19, and under-21 district teams and visited New Zealand in 1999 in the Glasgow Thistles’ development squad. The following year he returned to New Zealand as a member of the Scotland under-21 squad who took part in the SANZAR tournament. Previously he represented the Scottish Districts’ under-21 team against New Zealand Youth in November 1999 en route to making nine appearances for the Scotland under-21 side.

He has also played eight times for Scotland A, scoring two tries as a replacement in the 69-3 win against Georgia on his home ground at Firhill, Glasgow, in November 2008. He represented Scotland at sevens in the IRB’s 2002 tournaments in London and Cardiff and helped the Scottish Students to third place in the Students’ World Cup in Italy in August 2000.
