Simon Lockhart Webster was the only player to start in all five of Scotland’s 2007 Rugby World Cup matches – left wing in two, outside centre in three. He raised his try-scoring tally for Scotland to six with one in each of the two Tests on the 2006 tour in South Africa, and in November that year he added a seventh against Australia in the Murrayfield match that ended the Bank of Scotland Corporate autumn international series. He raised his tally to eight by scoring Scotland’s only try in the RBS Six Nations Championship match against Ireland at Croke Park in February 2008 after he had missed the Cardiff international two weeks earlier because of injury.

He started the 2008 championship on the left wing against France but was at outside centre for the match against Ireland in the subsequent Calcutta Cup win against England at Murrayfield and the championship finale against Italy in Rome. On the tour to Argentina in June 2008 he made a replacement appearance in the first Test defeat in Rosario and started on the right wing in the Scots’ 26-14 win in Buenos Aires a week later. Simon marked his Scotland debut with a try in the RWC Countdown loss to Ireland in September 2003. His second Scotland try was in the 2004 Six Nations outing against Italy and his third in the Test against Samoa on the 2004 summer tour. His fourth followed when he played as a substitute in the 2005 Autumn Test against New Zealand. After 25 international appearances (15 on the wing, 10 as a replacement) he made his first start as outside centre when Scotland beat Romania 42-0 in the 2007 Rugby World Cup match at Murrayfield, though he was back on the left wing against New Zealand five days later.

Simon has also played 13 games for Scotland A, making his debut in the November 2002 win over Fiji. He played in all three matches in Scotland A’s success in winning the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest in June 2009, when he scored two tries in the victory against Uruguay. Most recently he represented Scotland A against Italy A in Biella in February 2010.

He recovered from a knee injury to play for Scotland at under-19 level in the 2000 IRB/FIRA Junior World Championship in France, and he subsequently played eight times for Scotland under-21. He turned professional in time for the 2000-2001 season and went on to make his debut for Northampton Saints against Newcastle Falcons. In 2001 he was in the Barbarians’ team who won the Tilney Melrose Sevens, and the following year he signed for Edinburgh Rugby.

Simon, who is a former pupil of Yarm School in North Yorkshire, qualifies for Scotland through grandparents from Greenock.
